THE MAKING OF
THE EVIL STEPMOTHER. HOW LIFE EXPERIENCES CHANGE US. SINGLE OR MARRIED?

WHO ARE YOU?

Orazie Slayton-Cook is a daughter, a sister, an aunt, and a wife and she begrudgingly holds the title of stepmother. Hence the title. More important than those labels, Orazie is a public health advocate and animal rights proponent for marginalized groups and people enabling them to make the decisions that are best for themselves and their families. She is the founder of Praline’s Backyard Dog Services, which provides dog walking and pet sitting services in the Metro Atlanta Area. Because she wanted to do more than provide a great service in her community but wanted to give back to the broader community she founded Praline’s Backyard Foundation, whose mission is to provide temporary housing for the pets of domestic violence survivors anywhere in the United States via pet boarding facilities and countless pet fosters, while survivors are in transition to a new home.

WHAT MAKES YOU DIFFERENT?

This eliminates one of the barriers that may prevent survivors from leaving their abuser. The Foundation is transforming how survivors with pets access services for themselves and their pets when leaving an abuser. It’s success in meeting the needs of survivors is due to the commitment of everyone in her community on social media, every person that has donated, and survivors who have shared their stories that encouraged her along the journey. This website highlights her journey from singleness to marriage to someone with children to changing the landscape of dog services in the United States while advocating for domestic violence survivors and their pets by bringing attention to the world that domestic violence and animal abuse is a public health crisis.
